Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition

Partnering to Build a Just, Sustainable and Economically Viable Food System
within the City of Kawartha Lakes

Who are we?

The Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition (KLFC) is a community-based collaboration that represents the City of Kawartha Lakes community, individuals, organizations and stakeholders, with an interest in the food system, from production, to processing and distribution, through to consumption.

The Coalition was developed as an action group to foster programs within the community that ensure a just andsustainable food system, rooted in healthy communities, in which no one is hungry and everyone has access to healthy, nutritious food.

The Coalition promotes a food system that iseconomically viable, diverse and ecologically sustainable; to grow, harvest, process, transport and distribute food while minimizing waste.

Mission Statement
The Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition implements the Kawartha Lakes Food Charter and the Kawartha Lakes Food Action Plan through discussion, collaboration and cooperation of organizations and individual community members to build a just and sustainable food system for all in Kawartha Lakes.

Kawartha Lakes Food Charter
The Kawartha Lakes Food Charter is a document that outlines values and beliefs about the food system in the community, which includes supporting a vibrant community food culture, food security, community health, a strong farming economy and a healthy ecosystem. Read more about the Food Charter.

Strategic Priorities

In order to achieve the goals set out in the Kawartha Lakes Food Charter, the Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition has organized its action plan into three strategic priorities, the activities for which are planned, discussed and executed within the working groups. The strategic priorities are:

  • Regulatory Hurdles
  • Growth and Sustainability
  • Food Security

Why buy locally?

When you buy locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats and other products from our Kawartha Choice FarmFresh members at farms, local farmers' markets, stores, or at your favourite local eatery, you are supporting our local agricultural community and the farm families who produce the food. This in turn helps to preserve our local farmland, helps the environment by reducing "food miles", and expands the local food market. As well, you have a chance to build relationships with the farmers that grow your food, gain understanding and trust, and get to experience agriculture up close!
